Wedding thank-you card wording for a cash gift

Yes — send a card, and don't name the amount.
Thank them for the generosity, name what it's going toward, and leave the figure out. Emily Post calls the sum optional; most guides say it reads as a receipt. Omitting it is never wrong.

Thank you so much for your incredibly generous gift — we're putting it toward the deposit on our first house, and we'll think of you every time we walk through the door.

Money is the hardest gift to write a card for, because the job is to be warm and specific about the one thing you are not supposed to name. Below are eighteen notes that manage both — for cash, a check, a gift card and a contribution to a honeymoon or cash fund.

Cash in a card

💌 Thank-you card wording for a cash gift

Cash handed over at the reception, tucked into an envelope on the gift table, or sent by Venmo or Zelle before the day — all three take the same note. Thank the generosity, name the plan, leave the number out.

Note 01

Dear Aunt Carol, Thank you so much for your incredibly generous gift. We're putting it toward the deposit on our first house, which has felt like a someday for two years and now has a date attached to it. It meant so much to have you with us. With love, Amelia and Julian

Sum unnamed, plan namedPersonalize
Note 02

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Halloran, Thank you sincerely for your very kind gift, and for making the trip up for the weekend. We have set it aside toward the work on the house, and we will think of you both when it is finally finished. It was a pleasure to have you with us. With gratitude, Amelia and Julian

Note 03

Nadia — Thank you for the envelope, and for the note inside it, which we've kept. We're saving it toward a deposit while we work out where we're actually living next year, and we promise to tell you what it turns into. Thank you, Amelia and Julian

No firm plan yetPersonalize
Note 04

Dear Tomas and Priya, Thank you for sending such a generous gift, and for sending it before we'd even finished packing. It's going straight into the fund for the kitchen we've been drawing on napkins since March. Come and see us once it exists. With love, Amelia and Julian

Sent by Venmo or ZellePersonalize
Note 05

Dear Aunt Marguerite, Thank you, truly, for your very generous gift, and for dancing until the lights came on. We're putting it toward the trip to Lisbon we've talked about for years. We'll send photos when we get there. With love, Amelia and Julian

Checks

🖊️ Thank-you card wording for a check

A check is the one form where a quick text matters first: it can be lost in the mail, and a generous person is left wondering. Send the acknowledgement, then send the card.

Note 06

Dear Uncle Ray, Thank you so much for your incredibly generous check. It's going into the account we opened for the house, which suddenly looks a lot less theoretical. We hope to see you before too long. With love, Amelia and Julian

Check, sum unnamedPersonalize
Note 07

Dear Dr. and Mrs. Adeyemi, Please accept our heartfelt thanks for your check, and for the card that came with it. We have set it aside toward our first home, and we will think of you when the keys change hands. Our warmest regards to your family. With sincere thanks, Amelia and Julian

Note 08

Dear Beth, Thank you for your check — we had to read it twice. It takes a real weight off the move, and we're grateful in a way that's hard to fit on a card this size. Thank you for everything. With love, Amelia and Julian

Sam and Dev — Thank you so much for your check, and for the eleven photos you took that the photographer somehow missed. Next round is on us. Big love, Amelia and Julian

Gift cards

🎟️ Thank-you card wording for a gift card

A gift card sits halfway between money and a gift. Naming the store is the point — choosing it is the thoughtful part, and it gives you something concrete to say. The balance still stays out.

Note 10

Dear Helena, Thank you so much for the gift card — you clearly know us well. It's going toward the last few things for the kitchen, which means we'll think of you roughly every morning. We hope to see you soon. With love, Amelia and Julian

Store named, balance notPersonalize
Note 11

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Whitlock, Thank you sincerely for the gift card, and for choosing somewhere we genuinely love. We have a very specific plan for it: the dining chairs we have been circling for months. Thank you again for your generosity. With sincere thanks, Amelia and Julian

Kofi — Thank you for the gift card. We've already started spending it in our heads, which is nearly as fun as the real thing. Thanks again, Amelia and Julian

Dear Rosa and Michael, You absolutely spoiled us with the gift card, and with the note about your own first apartment, which we both read twice. It's going toward the bookshelves. Come and visit so we can feed you properly. With love (and cake), Amelia and Julian

Honeymoon and cash funds

✈️ Thank-you card wording for a fund contribution

Fund platforms attach a line item to every contribution, so use it. Thanking someone for the snorkeling trip is warmer and far more specific than thanking them for a transfer.

Note 14

Dear Yara, Thank you so much for your contribution to our honeymoon fund — it means more than you know. You funded the first night in Kyoto, which is the part of the trip we'd have quietly cut. We'll send photos from the exact spot. With love, Amelia and Julian

Note 15

Dear Uncle Bertrand, We are deeply grateful for your contribution to our honeymoon, and for the message you left with it. It turns a nice idea into a booking, and we are still grinning about it. We hope to see you again before long. With gratitude, Amelia and Julian

Note 16

Dear Ines and Paulo, Thank you for the cooking class in Oaxaca — of everything on that list, it's the one we'd have talked ourselves out of. Because of you we're actually doing it. We'll report back on whether we can now cook. With love, Amelia and Julian

Note 17

Jess — Thank you for chipping in on the flights. That's the boring half of a honeymoon and you took it off our hands entirely. Gratefully, Amelia and Julian

Note 18

Dear Gran, We're still not over your contribution to the fund — you pushed us over a line we didn't think we'd cross this year. We're using it for the two nights by the water, which we'll tell you all about in person. Thank you for everything. With so much love, Amelia and Julian

Which thank-you card are you writing?

The four forms money arrives in take genuinely different wording, and two of the cases below aren't really this page's job. Find yours, then use the matching section.

Which of these is your case?
1

Cash, or an app transfer, from one person or coupleOne card, thank the generosity, name the plan not the number

The default case, and the first section below. Money that arrived by Venmo or Zelle is a cash gift and takes the same note — the reply you sent in the app was a receipt, not the thank-you.

2

A check in the mailAcknowledge it the same week, then send the card

A check is the one form that can genuinely vanish in the post, and silence reads as loss. Text or call to say it arrived, then write the card like any other money note.

3

A gift cardName the store, not the balance

A gift card is halfway between money and a gift: it's fine to name where it's from, because choosing the shop is the thoughtful part. The balance still stays out.

4

A contribution to a honeymoon or cash fundThank them for the specific thing they funded

Fund platforms attach a line item to every contribution, so the courtesy is to use it: thank them for the snorkeling trip or the first night, not for "your contribution".

5

One envelope of cash from several peopleOne note to the group, or one each if you know who gave what

Money pooled by a group follows group-gift etiquette rather than money etiquette, and the wording changes more than you'd expect.

See the wording for that →

6

Money from parents who also paid for the weddingThis is a letter, not a card

When the same people funded the day and gave a gift, a card-sized thank-you reads thin. The parents page covers the longer piece, including when one side paid for more.

Which artifact is this?

Thank-you card, text or letter — for a money gift

A money gift usually needs two of the three, in that order. Sending only the text is the mistake; sending only the card two months later leaves a generous person wondering whether the envelope ever arrived at all.

✉️

The carda handwritten card in the mail

Within three months of the wedding. This is the real thank-you for any money gift, and what the eighteen notes below are for. It is not replaced by a text, however warm the text was.

💬

The texta same-week message confirming the money arrived

Within a week of the gift arriving. Send it for money specifically, because cash, checks and mistyped transfers can genuinely go missing. It is a receipt, not a thank-you: it buys time for the card, it never replaces it.

📄

The lettera longer letter with no card around it

Whenever you're ready, inside the same three months. Reserve it for parents and for anyone whose gift was life-changing rather than generous. It is not the default: for most money gifts a full letter reads as overcorrection.

The rules for money

Four rules for every money thank-you note

These four hold whichever side of the name-the-sum argument you come down on. Everything in the next section is where the guides actually disagree.

1

Name the plan, not the number

The plan is what makes the note specific, which is the whole job of a thank-you card. The deposit, the kitchen, the second week of the trip — anything concrete beats "we'll put it to good use".

2

Acknowledge cash, checks and transfers within the week

This is the one gift type that can genuinely vanish between two people. A short text or call saying it arrived is a receipt, not a thank-you, and the handwritten card still follows.

3

Say "generous" once, not three times

Repeating it reads as anxiety about the amount, which is the exact impression the no-numbers rule exists to avoid. One warm adjective, then move on to what the money is doing.

4

Handwrite it, even for a hundred names

A printed message with a signature underneath reads like a statement for the sum you were careful not to mention. Handwritten and mailed is what makes it a thank-you card rather than an acknowledgement.

Mistakes to avoid

What goes wrong in a money thank-you card

The first two are live disagreements between the guides, not settled rules — pick a side knowingly. The rest are what the people who gave the money actually complain about afterwards.

Assuming the amount question is settled

It isn't. The Emily Post Institute calls mentioning the amount optional, and points out that it does let the giver know the correct sum arrived. Most wedding publications say never write the number, because a figure on a card reads like a receipt and lands badly if two relatives compare notes. Our call, and the safer one: leave it out of the card. If you genuinely need to confirm what a mailed check was for, do that in the same-week text or call, where it's a fraud check rather than a thank-you.

Treating one deadline as the deadline

The guides split here too. Emily Post's rule is within three months of receiving the gift, which starts the clock on the gift rather than the wedding. The Knot's widely quoted version is within three months of the wedding, and within two weeks for anything that arrived before the day. Both are defensible — pick one and apply it to the whole list, rather than discovering the stricter one in month four.

Letting the text stand in for the card

The text and the card are sequential, not alternative. Send the message the week the money arrives so the sender knows it landed, then mail the card inside three months. Doing only the first is the single most common complaint from people who gave money and heard nothing more.

Writing "we're saving it" and stopping there

It's the most common non-answer on this page's subject and it tells the giver nothing, because saving is what money does by default. Either name what you're saving toward — a deposit, the move, a car that starts — or say honestly that you haven't decided and promise to tell them what it turns into. The second version is better than an invented purchase you'll be asked about later.

Treating a Venmo or Zelle transfer as already thanked

Replying "thank you!!" in the payment thread is the same-week acknowledgement, and that's all it is. Money that arrives by app is a cash gift and gets the same handwritten card as an envelope. The practical catch is that a transfer comes with no return address, so app-senders are exactly the guests whose mailing address you don't have.

Writing one note for cash that several people pooled

If nine people put money in one envelope and signed one card, that's a group gift, and one warm note to the group is right — the wording changes more than you'd expect, and the group-gift page covers it. If they each transferred separately and you know who gave what, write individual notes and never let one refer to another.

Write yours

Write a thank-you note for a money gift

Preset for a money gift. Switch the form to cash, a gift card or a fund contribution, or switch to the whole gift list to walk every name at once — each note is written from its own seed, so no two read alike.

Etiquette holds either way, but most guides agree: thank them for the generosity, not the number.

This note

Describe it the way you'd say it out loud. Never name the amount.

Inside three months, the note doesn't apologize. After that, it does — once, and briefly.

Private by design: the names, gifts and notes you type never leave your browser — every note is written on this page. No signup, no credits, no cap on how many you write.

Good to know

Money thank-you card questions

Do you mention the amount of money in a wedding thank-you card?

Most wedding publications say never write the number, because a figure on a card reads like a receipt and lands badly if two guests compare notes. The Emily Post Institute is softer: it calls mentioning the amount optional, and notes that it does confirm the correct sum arrived. Leaving it out is never wrong, so that is the safe default — thank them for their generosity and name what the money is going toward instead.

What do you say in a thank-you card for a cash wedding gift?

Three things, in order: thank them for the gift and their generosity, name what it is going toward, and close with something personal about having them there. "Thank you so much for your generous gift — we're putting it toward the deposit on our first house" does the first two in one sentence.

Is it rude to write "thank you for the money" in a thank-you card?

It is not rude, but "gift" and "generosity" are warmer and more usual, and they read less like an accounting entry. The stronger convention is the one about the figure: name the plan, not the number.

How long do you have to send a thank-you card for a cash gift?

Three months is the standard, but the two big sources measure it differently. Emily Post's rule is within three months of receiving the gift; The Knot's widely quoted version is within three months of the wedding, and within two weeks for gifts that arrived before the day. Both are defensible, and everyone agrees that a late note is far better than none.

Do you have to say what you're spending the money on in the thank-you card?

You don't have to, but it is what makes the note specific, and specific is the whole job. If you genuinely have no plan yet, say so honestly — "we're saving it while we decide, and we'll tell you what it turns into" is better than an invented purchase. "We're saving it" on its own tells the giver nothing.

Do you send a thank-you card for money sent by Venmo or Zelle?

Yes. An app transfer is a cash gift, and the thumbs-up or thank-you you sent back in the app is the same-week acknowledgement, not the thank-you. Write the same handwritten card you'd write for an envelope. The one extra job is practical: a transfer carries no return address, so those are usually the guests whose mailing address you'll have to ask for.

Can we send a text instead of a thank-you card for a cash gift?

Send both, in that order. A text the week the money arrives tells the sender it wasn't lost, which matters more for cash and checks than for anything else. The handwritten card still follows inside three months — the text buys time for it, it does not replace it.

You have the words. Now you need the addresses.

Text My Wedding texts every guest a link, they type their own mailing address, and you export the list in the shape a stationer or a calligrapher accepts.

You have 120 phone numbers and about nine mailing addresses — and the people who sent money by app are the ones whose envelope you have never seen.
